Every December in Milan, just when the winter chill arrives and the city lights start glowing brighter, something special comes back to life – something that all of us at Il Centro – Italian Language School in Milan look forward to every year. It’s the return of Oh Bej! Oh Bej!, the city’s most historic and beloved Christmas market.

For many Milanese, this event marks the true beginning of the holiday season. For our students, it becomes a magical cultural experience. And for us as a school, it’s always a joy to bring our learners into the heart of this tradition – especially because the market is just a short, scenic walk from our classrooms in Brera, one of Milan’s most charming districts.

We often go together – sometimes after lessons, sometimes during longer breaks. In this guide, we want to tell you not only what this market is, but why it matters to us, why students love it, and how you can enjoy it like a true local.

1. What “Oh Bej! Oh Bej!” Really Means

The name Oh Bej! Oh Bej! comes from the old Milanese dialect and literally means:

“Oh, how beautiful! Oh, how lovely!”

It expresses joy – the kind of excitement you might hear from children running among the stalls or anyone discovering the perfect Christmas gift. For Italian learners, it’s also a reminder of how rich Italy is in dialects and local expressions, each adding character to a city’s identity.

2. A Tradition With More Than 500 Years of History

The story of Oh Bej! Oh Bej! begins in 1510. According to tradition, a papal envoy named Giannetto Castiglione arrived in Milan on the feast day of Saint Ambrose, the city’s patron saint.

To win the hearts of the locals – especially children – he brought sweets, toys and small gifts. The children, delighted, ran around shouting:

“Oh bej! Oh bej!”

That joyful moment became the origin of a tradition that has survived for over five centuries. Walking among the stalls today means stepping into a living piece of Milanese history.

3. A Perfect Location: Near Our School and Surrounded by Beauty

One of the reasons we love Oh Bej! Oh Bej! is its location: around the Castello Sforzesco, just a short walk from our school in Brera.

From Il Centro, it takes about 10–12 minutes on foot. We leave school together, walk through Brera’s atmospheric streets, pass artists’ studios and cafés, and suddenly the castle appears, surrounded by lights, stalls, and the smell of roasted chestnuts.

During the days of the market, the streets between Brera, Lanza and the Castello Sforzesco are filled with lights, winter smells, musicians, families and curious visitors. It’s one of the most welcoming moments of the Milanese winter.

At Il Centro, we believe in learning Italian by living it. In December we introduce:

  • Christmas and winter vocabulary
  • market and shopping dialogues
