How Il Centro Began
The story of Il Centro began with Enrica Cavo’s experience teaching Italian to international students. After studying foreign languages, she became increasingly interested in communication and intercultural exchange.
At the time, many traditional language courses were based mainly on grammar rules, written exercises and memorisation. Enrica believed that students needed a more direct and intuitive way to understand and use Italian.
Together with Luisa Turolla, she developed a teaching approach based on images, everyday situations, authentic language and active participation. This shared educational vision led to the foundation of Il Centro in Milan in 1986.
A New Way of Teaching Italian
From the beginning, lessons at Il Centro were designed to involve students actively. Grammar and vocabulary were not presented as isolated rules, but introduced through situations that students might encounter in everyday life.
This gradually developed into the school’s communicative and humanistic teaching method.
Students learn to understand how Italian works by using the language, interacting with their teachers and classmates and reflecting on real examples.
The objective is not simply to complete exercises correctly. It is to help every student develop the confidence and independence needed to communicate naturally in Italian.
Forty Years of Teaching International Students
Since 1986, Il Centro has taught students from many different countries, cultures and professional backgrounds. Over the years, the school has welcomed university students, professionals, artists, diplomats and people learning Italian for personal or family reasons.

Growing Without Losing Human Connection
Over four decades, teaching tools and student needs have changed considerably. Il Centro has continued to evolve while preserving the importance of direct interaction between students and teachers.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the school transferred its lessons online, allowing students around the world to continue learning Italian. The experience confirmed that technology can support language learning effectively when lessons remain live, interactive and guided by qualified teachers.
Today, our online Italian courses continue to use the same communicative principles as our face-to-face classes in Milan.
