Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Italian Grammar, there was a group of little words called Prepositions. Although small, they had great power: the ability to connect words, creating meanings and relationships. The Prepositions loved to play hide-and-seek, but sometimes this game made it difficult for foreigners to find the right path in the labyrinth of the Italian language.
“A”, the adventurous one, loved jumping from one city to another. “I’m going to Rome,” it would say enthusiastically, inviting everyone to travel around Italy.
“Di”, the thinker, preferred pondering origins and ownership. “Whose ice cream is this?” it would ask curiously, solving mysteries of the world around it.
“In”, the explorer, couldn’t wait to dive into new adventures, whether it was entering a mysterious place or participating in an exciting activity.
“Da”, the time traveler, connected the present with the past. “I come from a distant era,” it would recount, making listeners dream with its stories.
“Con”, the loyal friend, was never apart from its companions. It loved sharing every moment, emphasizing the importance of being “with friends.”
“Su”, the optimist, encouraged everyone to look up, dreaming big. “Let’s go to Mars!” it exclaimed, pointing to the starry sky.
“Per”, the passionate traveler, crossed every road and path. “To get to the treasure, we must cross the forest,” it guided determinedly.
“Tra” and “Fra”, the inseparable twins, loved being in company and often reminded others that they would always be there “in ten minutes” or “among the best friends.”
These little words, with their great adventures, helped build bridges between ideas, transforming every sentence into a unique and special journey. Thanks to them, foreign students began to see not an obstacle but an invitation to explore the wonderful world of Italian, one preposition at a time.
Simple and Articulated Prepositions

The simple prepositions in Italian are: di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra, fra.
The articulated prepositions are formed by combining a simple preposition with a definite article. For example, “di + il” becomes “del”, “a + la” becomes “alla”, and so on. These prepositions combine the function of the preposition (indicating the relationship) with that of the article (defining the noun), specifying the relationship more precisely.
