Italian Language Experiences in Milan: A Visit to the Orto Botanico di Brera

Italian Language Experiences in Milan: A Visit to the Orto Botanico di Brera
Share it

Just steps away from our Italian language school, Il Centro, lies a peaceful, green oasis that even many locals don’t know about—the Orto Botanico di Brera. We recently brought our students there to enjoy one of our favorite Italian language experiences in Milan: an outdoor lesson surrounded by nature, art, and history.

A Hidden Gem Near Our School

Located in the heart of the Brera district, just behind the Pinacoteca and the Academy of Fine Arts, the Brera Botanical Garden is a peaceful and historic space. Created in 1774 by Maria Theresa of Austria, it was originally intended to support the study of medicine and pharmacy. Today, it is curated by the University of Milan and open to the public for free.

Despite its central location, this garden remains a hidden gem. That’s why it’s perfect for our school—we often use it as a backdrop for casual, open-air language practice and cultural discovery.

An Outdoor Lesson to Remember

During our recent visit, we walked along shaded paths, admired centuries-old trees, and practiced vocabulary and conversation inspired by the garden’s natural beauty. One of our favorite moments was capturing a photo of Grazia, one of our teachers, with a student—smiling together in the sunshine.

This was more than a walk: it was a real part of our students’ Italian language experience in Milan, making learning both authentic and memorable.

What You’ll Find in the Garden

  • 🌳 An 18th-century Ginkgo biloba tree
  • 🌿 Medicinal and aromatic herbs
  • 🌸 Seasonal flowers like magnolias, irises, and lilacs
  • 🐟 A pond with aquatic plants
  • 🪑 Peaceful benches for sketching, reading, or reflecting
