How to Get a Tax Code in Italy for Foreigners? We have just prepared a simple guide for you! If you’re moving to Italy, you’ll need a codice fiscale — the Italian tax code. This alphanumeric code identifies you for official purposes. It’s based on your name, surname, gender, and place of birth.
Why Do You Need a Tax Code in Italy?
The Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency) provides the tax code. You’ll need it for almost everything: public healthcare, opening a bank account, signing a lease, starting a job, or even getting internet at home. Without a codice fiscale, daily life in Italy becomes difficult.
Where Can You Get a Tax Code?
Visit the Immigration Office (Sportello Unico Immigrazione) at your local Questura (police headquarters). Every Italian province has one.
- If you already have a residence permit:
Go to your local Agenzia delle Entrate office. They’ll create your tax code through a secure online system connected to the national tax registry.
- If you’re still waiting for your residence permit:
You can apply for your tax code at the Questura. They will forward the request to the Agenzia delle Entrate while processing your residence permit.
Planning to study in Italy? You’ll need a student visa. To qualify, you must enroll in a course with at least 20 lessons per week. After arriving, go to a post office within eight days and request a “Post Office Kit” to apply for your residence permit. Our school can help you fill it out.
What Documents Do You Need?
You’ll need to complete Form AA4/B. Write your personal details in block letters, along with your Italian address and permanent address abroad. Thanks to digital tools, the process is faster now. After checking your info, the Agenzia delle Entrate sends your tax code by mail to the address you provided—usually within a few days.
